Background
Parle Technologies identified a critical need to enhance security and governance for local administrator credentials across its IT environment. With over 100 endpoints, safeguarding privileged access and ensuring compliance with best practices was paramount.
Solution Overview
Parle Technologies implemented Microsoft Local Administrator Password Solution (LAPS) with a focus on robust password policies, strict ACL management, and integrated continuous monitoring.
Technical Details
Password Policies Enforced: Passwords for local admin accounts are generated with a length between 15 and 20 characters, including a mandatory mix of uppercase, lowercase, numerals, and special symbols to ensure strong complexity. Passwords are rotated every 30 days automatically by LAPS.
Access Control Lists (ACLs): Permissions on retrieved passwords are tightly controlled, granting read access exclusively to Tier 2 and above administrators to minimize risk. ACLs are carefully segmented by organizational roles and environments to enforce least privilege.
Monitoring Integration: Password retrieval events are continuously logged and monitored through integration with Azure Sentinel SIEM. This enables real-time alerting and forensic analysis of password access activities, providing a centralized oversight layer.
Governance and Preventive Measures
Least Privilege Alignment: Administrative access workflows were redesigned to apply the principle of least privilege, allowing users access only to the minimal permissions necessary for their roles.
Just-In-Time Access: Considerations for Just-In-Time privileged access were incorporated to temporarily elevate permissions when needed, reducing standing access risks.
Contingency Plans: A fallback procedure was established for scenarios where LAPS may be inaccessible or fail, including documented escalation and manual recovery protocols to ensure uninterrupted administrative access.
Key Lessons Learned
- The solution scaled effectively across 100+ endpoints, demonstrating versatility and ease of deployment.
- Future enhancements are planned to expand Just-In-Time capabilities and further automate monitoring responses.
- Collaboration between IT security, administration, and support teams was critical to successful rollout and adoption.
Outcomes and Metrics
- Achieved zero incidents of credential sharing post-implementation, strengthening security posture.
- Experienced a 50% reduction in IT helpdesk tickets related to local admin access within the first three months.
- Improved compliance audit metrics with clear evidence of password policy enforcement and controlled access.
- Enhanced ability to proactively monitor and respond to password access anomalies due to integrated SIEM alerts.
